At The Gentleman Brewing Company, we’ve received feedback about the term "Gentleman" in our brand name, suggesting it might imply a male-only focus. We appreciate this feedback and want to share our interpretation of the term.
Traditionally, "Gentleman" signifies honour, integrity, courtesy, and respect—values we believe are universal and not confined by gender. For us, "Gentleman" embodies these virtues, open to all who strive to live by them. Historically, the term has evolved to represent character and conduct rather than gender, as seen in examples like the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," which included both men and women who possessed exceptional skills and upheld strong moral values. For us, this demonstrates that being a "Gentleman" is about embodying admirable qualities, regardless of gender, race, or background.
At The Gentleman Brewing Company, we see "Gentleman" as a symbol of respect, kindness, integrity, and excellence. Our beers are crafted with these principles in mind, representing the dedication and passion we believe a modern "Gentleman"—of any gender, race, or background—brings to their endeavours.
While we cherish the heritage and meaning behind "Gentleman," we also strive to ensure our brand is inclusive and resonates with everyone who shares our values.
Our initial character lineup might have been "male and pale" (thanks to Russell Burgess at Wet and Dry UK for the feedback) but this was not intentional. It was a starting point, and we recognise the need for more diversity. Moving forward, we are dedicated to introducing characters from various backgrounds who embody the qualities of a "Gentleman." This means celebrating those who demonstrate respect, integrity, and kindness, regardless of gender, race, or background.
We are not just building a brand; we are building a community. A community where everyone is accepted and valued. Our mission is to create a space where people come together to enjoy great beer and celebrate the virtues that make us all "Gentlemen" in spirit. We also aim to empower people by encouraging them to share their stories, fostering inspiration, and creating connections.
